Trapped in Your Own Home: The "Digital Arrest" Scam

Imagine being told you are under arrest, but instead of being taken to a police station, you are forced to stay on a Skype or WhatsApp video call for hours, isolated from the world, while scammers drain your bank account. This is "digital arrest," a frighteningly effective evolution of cyber extortion that is sweeping across India.

What is Digital Arrest?

Digital arrest is a method used by scammers where they impersonate law enforcement officials (like police, CBI, or ED) and coerce a victim into staying on a video call. During this time, the victim is psychologically manipulated, threatened, and isolated, making them believe they are genuinely under investigation and cannot disconnect the call or contact anyone. The ultimate goal is to force them to transfer large sums of money under the guise of "verification" or "settlement."

The Anatomy of the Scam

  1. The Hook: It often starts with a call about a fake problem, like the FedEx/parcel scam, or a claim that your mobile number was used for illegal activities.
  2. The Impersonation: The call is transferred to a "senior officer" on a video call. The scammer uses a fake uniform, a virtual background of a police station, and speaks in an authoritative, intimidating tone.
  3. The "Evidence": They present fake documents like an FIR, arrest warrant, or a non-disclosure agreement with official-looking logos to make the threat seem real. Your name and Aadhaar details (often sourced from data leaks) are used to make it personal.
  4. The Isolation: They order you to go into a room alone, keep your camera on at all times, and forbid you from talking to anyone. This is the "arrest." You are now in their virtual custody.
  5. The Extortion: Once you are isolated and terrified, they demand you transfer money from your bank accounts to theirs for "auditing" or to "check for criminal links." They create immense pressure, claiming that cooperation will clear your name quickly.

Why This Scam is So Effective

  • Psychological Manipulation: It preys on the fear and respect that law-abiding citizens have for authority.
  • Visual Deception: The use of uniforms and official-looking documents on a video call makes the scam highly believable.
  • Isolation: By cutting you off from your family and friends, they prevent you from getting a reality check.
  • Sense of Urgency: The constant threats of legal action and imprisonment create panic, leading to irrational decisions.

How to Protect Yourself: The Golden Rules

Remember: Law Enforcement Does Not Operate This Way.

  1. Police and CBI do not conduct arrests or investigations over Skype or WhatsApp. Official communication is done through written notices sent to your physical address.
  2. No government agency will ever ask you to transfer money for any kind of verification. This is a 100% sign of a scam.
  3. If you receive such a call, disconnect immediately. Do not argue or engage. Just hang up.
  4. Never share your screen or your bank account details.
  5. Immediately report the number and the incident to the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 or at www.cybercrime.gov.in.
